Fairy Crafting

I have always been fascinated with the world of the wee ones, the fae, or the fairies, as they are commonly known. Perhaps it’s the idea that there is some other world, a much smaller one, hiding deep within our own. Or that somewhere there exists a place full of fantasy, fancy, and absolute magic! Whatever it is, it still lives in that little part of me that is reserved for whimsy and wonder…the part that still believes in Santa Claus…the part that still believes that leprechauns plant four leaf clovers…and the part that believes the magic of fairies lives within each of us, if we just let it! And you can do just that by creating fairy-themed craft projects.

One of the best ways I’ve seen to have fun with fairies in crafts is to create a Captured Fairy Jar.

This creative craft is very popular with vintage artists, altered artists, scrappers, and crafters alike. You can find images of them all over the web, along with some wonderful tutorials for creating them. You can create any kind of fairy that you like. It can be a happy little whimsical fairy, a dark and scary fairy, or any kind of impish little sprite that meets your liking. Get creative with it and have fun! Put your captured fairies around your home and they’ll get lots of attentions, I’m sure.

Another fun fairy craft is the Fairy Dust Bottle.

All you need to create this is a really small bottle or jar, some glitter, a few embellishments, and the words “Fairy Dust” printed on the paper of your choice. If you can, go to thrift stores or antique shops to find some really great aged bottles that would be perfect for this project. These would make adorable party favors for a little girl’s birthday party; they’d also be great as a gift for any fairy collector. After all, who couldn’t use a little fairy dust?

You can also add a Fairy Door to your home, yard, or garden, to create a magical pixie portal from middle earth to our world for those wee ones. Legend has it that only fairies can open the doors (and only from the inside), and only after the people around them are fast asleep. You can buy Fairy Doors all over the Web these days, and most are very affordable. They can go on walls inside your home, or outside your home by your own front door. They also make some that attach to trees and other items in your garden. But if you’re feeling really crafty, you could always make your own out of plaster, wood, ceramic, twigs, salt dough, or anything else that could be sealed or used outdoors. Wanna see more fairy doors for inspiration? Just do a Google image search for “fairy doors” and you will get tons of results.

Here’s hoping you are able to capture your inner fairy by creating some of these wonderful crafts. Maybe I’ll catch you sometime…on the other side of the fairy door! (The fairy door shown below can be found at http://www.hearthsong.com/)
